He had only just met Lorenzo Da Ponte, who would later pen the libretti for several of Mozart's most successful operas, but Da Ponte was not available, so Mozart turned to Giambattista Varesco, librettist for Mozart's earlier opera Idomeneo. It was the first Mozart opera produced in England: at the King’s Theatre Haymarket in 1806. From the early 1950s, La Clemenza gradually regained its former reputation. Lorenzo Da Ponte crafted the Italian libretto. The opera is based on a legendary fictional character called “Don Juan,” who is a seducer and libertine. Tirso de Molina, a Spanish poet and dramatist of the Baroque era, created this famous personality.
